#42 The Hip-Hop Vatican: Afrika Bambaataa & Betrayal Pt. 1

Afrika Bambaataa (R) was accused of molesting Ronald Savage aka Bee Stinger (L) when Savage was a young teenager. After telling the press he never knew Bee Stinger, it was was proven that in fact he had known Savage and done events with him in the early 1980's. If Bam would lie about knowing Savage, what else would he be untruthful about? Photo courtesy of www.clutchmagazine.com .

Over the past few weeks Afrika Bambaataa founder of the Universal Zulu Nation (the oldest and up until now the most respected organization in Hip-Hop) was hit with a barrage of sexual abuse charges. They all came from grown men who were abused allegedly as children by Bambaataa. At first it just seemed weird and hard to comprehend. Today the organization teeters on the brink of complete collapse. There is war and rumors of war all inside the Hip-Hop underground. Many individual rappers and rap groups who one might think would speak up, have remained silent as church mice. Some of those who have spoken up and out about the allegations against Afrika Bambaataa have been called government agents of COINTELPRO and attacked online.

Unfortunately, as time went on, it only got more and more weird. I was a member of the Universal Zulu Nation (UZN) since the early 1990's. I am from the first group of Bay Area Zulu Members. I wrote about my resignation from the organization and condemned the top tier leadership of the organization in a statement at www.hiphopchess.blogspot.com . After my resignation I got a lot of support from people inside the UZN. Shortly after artists like 9th Wonder and others all started to condemn the allegations and remove themselves from UZN.

As you might know, I had JUST DROPPED my book Bobby, Bruce & Bam: The Secrets of Hip-Hop Chess April 10th of this year. People were loving it, I had a great momentum- then thissss. I took Bam off the cover. I just had a new design made and the new ones should be ready within the next ten days.

The truth of the matter is that Bambaataa HAS NOT been charged to date. However, the accusations continue to climb and from all the chaos there is only one sure thing: The Universal Zulu Nation has a potentially corrupt founder and a sinister set of top tier leadership that enabled him in a Vatican style scenario. This story is still developing and only seems to be getting worse. Some of you may not know Afrika Bambaataa by name. But he is one of the core reasons anyone in the world knows Hip-Hop exists. This podcast is a serious conversation about what happened, its implications and
